BRIDGEPORT CONDOS

Is there a neighborhood more classically Chicago than Bridgeport?

It’s one of the city’s oldest communities, yet thanks to its proximity to downtown it has been brimming in recent years with new development and renewed interest. It has been home to five Chicago mayors and countless politicians and city workers. And there are also plenty of Bridgeport condos.

Bridgeport is also one of Chicago’s most ethnically diverse, which may come as a surprise to many Chicagoans who still think of Bridgeport almost exclusively as an Irish-American neighborhood. In 2008 the Chicago Sun-Times ranked Bridgeport as the fourth most ethnically diverse community in the city, following Albany Park, West Ridge and Rogers Park.

Like many of Chicago’s 77 officially recognized neighborhoods, boundaries can sometimes vary depending upon who is asked. But generally, Bridgeport is defined as the community between the Chicago River on the north and west, Canal Street on the East and Pershing Road (3900 South) on the South.

Parishes and churches are numerous in Bridgeport. So, too, are independent shops that line Halsted Street, 35th Street, Pershing Road, Archer Avenue and other thoroughfares.

Real estate is plentiful and varied. There are plenty of Chicago condos for sale in Bridgeport along with townhomes, single family houses and multi-unit properties that are located throughout the community.

Bridgeport condos include one- , two- and three-bedroom residences. Even loft-style condominiums are available. Buyers can choose from existing condos to new construction at a variety of price points. Interest in Bridgeport has bloomed in recent years as people have realized the value available in the area along with convenient transportation and ease of getting downtown.

Arguably contributing significantly to the most recent interest in Bridgeport has been the 2005 World Series championship won by the beloved local baseball team, the White Sox. The World Series victory ended an 88-year old drought for the Sox and brought in huge numbers of new and long-time fans to the ballpark and to local neighborhood establishments.

Ironically, despite the common belief that the White Sox’ ball field (first, Comiskey Park and now U. S. Cellular Field) is a Bridgeport institution, the stadium actually resides one block outside the Bridgeport boundaries, in a community called Armour Square.

And speaking of neighborhood trivia, Chicago’s current mayor, Richard M. Daley, no longer lives in Bridgeport where he was born, raised and spent the first portion of his tenure as mayor. Although his famous father, the late Mayor Richard J. Daley spent his entire adult life in Bridgeport, and several other mayors have come from the neighborhood, the current Mayor Daley has since moved north toward downtown.
