HYDE PARK CONDOS

For a variety of reasons, Hyde Park is one of Chicago’s most well-known and prominent communities.

Hyde Park condos are located in this historic neighborhood, anchored by the world-renowned University of Chicago. The community is regarded as one of Chicago’s most diverse and is often thought to be where President Barack Obama and his family have a home, although the Obama house is actually in nearby Kenwood, only a block or so outside the Hyde Park border. President Obama, however, did reside in Hyde Park before he and his wife bought their home in Kenwood.

Hyde Park condos are available in a substantial price range at the time of this summary. Some studio and one-bedroom condos are priced well under $100,000, while luxury high-rise condominiums can easily approach $1 million and more.

The housing landscape of Hyde Park is dominated by multi-unit apartment rentals and condo buildings, along with townhomes and some single family houses. These houses are typically of large scale and quite expensive. Perhaps no single house in Hyde Park is more famous than the Prairie-style Robie House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the early 1900s. Robie House is a U.S. National Historic Landmark.

The borders of Hyde Park are commonly regarded as 51st Street (Hyde Park Boulevard) on the north, Cottage Grove Avenue on the west, the Lake Michigan shoreline on the east and the Midway Plaisance on the south, is located approximately at 59th/60th Streets.

Midway Plaisance, or just “the Midway” as it is locally known, is one of the most famous open spaces in Chicago and perhaps the nation. It is a one-block wide green space that runs for many blocks along the southern border of the University of Chicago and beyond, connecting Washington Park to the west and Jackson Park to the east (the actual parks, not the communities) along Lake Michigan.

Spectacular views of the Chicago skyline are visible from Promontory Point that juts into Lake Michigan at approximately 5500 South.

Among the many attractions in Hyde Park is the Museum of Science and Industry, famous for its interactive educational displays along with a replica of a working coal mine, an actual German submarine from World War II, the streamlined diesel-powered Burlington Zephyr and more.

Bookstores, cafes and restaurants dot the Hyde Park community. Artists, intellectuals, activists, politicians, musicians, corporate leaders and everyday citizens have long been drawn to Hyde Park for its unique tapestry and way of life.
